世界中を飛び回るビジネスエグゼクティブにとって、移動中の機内をいかに快適に過ごせるかは重要な関心事であろう。〈JAL Shell Flat Seat〉は、「リラックス＆プライベート」をコンセプトに、多様な行為に対応する機能を一体感のあるシェル型に集約した航空機シートである。十数時間に及ぶ限定された機内空間での、休息、機内エンターテインメント、仕事、食事、睡眠などの様々な利用状態に対応するため、開放感とプライバシーという、相反する条件を満たすソリューションがなされている。落ち着いた色調のインナースペースは包み込まれるような安心感とプライベート感を与え、曲面を用いたアウターシェルは未来感覚溢れるスタイリッシュな機内空間を創出し、乗客に新鮮な体験をもたらした。従来の航空機シートの概念にとらわれることなく、一段高い視点から対象を捉え直した好例といえる。競争の激しい国際線のビジネスクラスシートデザインにあって、高い完成度と優れた造形性を備え、独創的なシェル型デザインの原型を生み出したことは特筆に値するだろう。

| For business executives who travel all over the world, the comfort of an airplane cabin is quite important. The concept of the <JAL Shell Flat Seat> is "relaxation and privacy." It is an aircraft seat that brings together the functions that correspond to various needs in a shell-shaped form. To meet the different requirements of a ten-hour flight as they are posed by activities such as resting, enjoying the entertainment program, working, eating, and sleeping, the seat has to provide a solution for the combination of opposed factors, i.e. to combine a sense of openness and a sense of privacy. Thus, the inner space with its calm color gives a nice feeling of relaxation and privacy, whereas the curved line of the outer shell creates a futuristic and stylish cabin atmosphere, giving the passengers a fresh experience. It can be said that this is a good example for a design that is not caught in the concept of previous aircraft seats and whose perspective on this design task is one step ahead. In the tough world of business class seat design for international flights, the fact that they came up with this prototype of a unique shell-shaped design with a high-perfection finish and an excellent form is worth mentioning. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
