この製品に出会ったとき、「何と大胆な造形だろう」と心地よい驚きを覚えた。それは奇抜という意味ではなく、大径・小径のシリンダー2本を横向き平行に配し、シリンダーを白色に、他の要素は黒色にという明解なカラーリングでその存在感をより強調しているところだ。プリンタデザインにおいて以前より同社やオリベッティ社などでシリンダー形状をモチーフにしたデザインは存在したが、これほど大胆なものは初めてお目にかかる。単純な造形故「誰にでもできる」と思いがちだが、工業製品のデザインはそれ程単純ではない。発案し、エンジニアや社内関係各署に理解してもらい、共に目標に向かう。デザイナーの力量が試される地味な作業の勝利といえる。キヤノンカメラデザインには「ボックス&サークル」というキーワードがあると聞いた。それがデザインにおいての「キヤノンらしさ」を作っているのだとすると、アイテムは違えど、同様にプリミティブな造形要素をモチーフにしたこのデザインは「らしさ」をストレートに表現したものだといえる。この単純化された造形の中に、操作系ボタンの配色が品よく配置された様は、健全で良質なデザインに出会ったという安堵感に浸ることができる。

| When I encountered this product for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised and thought: "What a bold form!" It was not meant to be unique, but it is distinguished by the fact that the product emphasizes its presence by placing one big and one small cylinder sideways in parallel and by distinctly coloring them white while the other parts are black. Printer designs using cylindrical shapes already existed in products of brands such as Canon and Olivetti, but they were never so bold as this one. Due to the simple shape, one tends to think "anybody can do it," but the designing of industrial products is by far not simple: coming up with an idea, gaining understanding from engineers and other relevant departments within the company, and then realizing the goal together. It can be said that it is a victory of honest work, which put the designer's abilities to the test. I have once heard that the keyword for Canon's camera design is "box & circle." If that is what makes Canon "truly Canon" in terms of design, it can be said that this design, which also uses a simple shaping element as a motif straightforwardly, expressesven though it is not a camera he essence of "truly Canon." With gracefully colored control buttons within this simplified shape, one can truly experience the pleasure that is felt when encountering a sound quality design. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
