This initiative was started in 1998. A year after that, an exhibition to present the selected products was held, and has been continuously held up to this year's 9th exhibition. To corporations taking part in this activity, to everyone coming to the exhibition, and also to those of you who are looking at this catalogue, we'd like to extend our warmest thanks, since it would not be possible to hold this exhibition if it were not for you. The aim of this activity is to publicize the selection result of the "JIDA Design Museum" Collection, which our association runs. When deciding on the selection, we base our decision not only on the opinion of JIDAs members, but also on recommendations from the design market. The final selection of the year is based on how the product's design value or theme adapts to the present era. As long as the product is "attractive" in this sense, it does not have to be a new product. The first "JIDA Design Museum" was opened in Shinshu Shincho, Nagano, in 1997. It is a design museum where designers themselves do the project management, and celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007. Collections and related resources that have been donated in the course of the selection activities are considered joint properties of design and culture. So the items collected until then were displayed in the 10th anniversary exhibition "Genealogy of designs that live in various countries" and were also lent to an exhibition held at the Kawasaki Community Museum. Furthermore, eight design group associations initiated the "Association for the Preparation of the Founding of the D8-Japan Design Museum" in 2007, and will be participating in the development of environments where the association's product design, interior design, graphics design and other collections can be utilized effectively.
