なんと素直で美しくフレンドリーな造形だろう。売り場でひときわ強く目を引く存在だ。SCX1650はインクジェット式マルチファンクションプリンタだが、このカテゴリーにある韓国サムスン社の製品群はデザインテーストがよくコントロールされ一様にクオリティーの高いデザイン性を纏っている。日本でのサムスン社の印象は、半導体や液晶パネルなどIT機器に関わるデバイス製造メーカーと捉える向きが強いが、こと欧米では強いブランド力で民生品においても急速に市場を伸ばしている。またデザインの世界では、米国IDEA（The Industrial Design Excellence Awards）の累積取得数で2006年にはアップル社を抜きトップ※1に躍り出た。一方、韓国内で1993年からスタートしたサムスンデザインメンバーシップの他、2001年から実施しているグローバルデザインプロジェクトではそのメンバー対象範囲を広げ、日、米、英、伊の学生グループへ多くのデザインチャンスを与えるなど、幅広いデザイン活動に力を入れている。世界中の良き人材や技術を繋ぎ合わせデザイン主導で次期製品の方向性を提案するという大胆な開発姿勢が着実にグローバルなデザインオリエンテッド企業に成長させているのだろう。そしてその成果の一つがこのSCX1650であり、「サムスンデザイン」なのだ。

| What a simple but yet beautiful and friendly design this is. Its appearance dominates the shop and attracts attention. The < SCX1650 > is an inkjet multifunction printer and the designs of all printers of this type from the Korean manufacture SAMSUNG are well unobtrusive and of high quality. Although, in Japan, SAMSUNG is rather known as a manufacturer of IT products, such as semiconductors or and liquid crystal displays, in Europe, they are rapidly expanding their market into households with the help of their brand value. Beside this, in the design world, SAMSUNG has surpassed APPLE and became number 1 with regard to the total number of America's Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) they have won*1. Samsung initiated various design activities, such as the Samsung Design Membership that started in Korea in 1993. And also the Global Design Project has taken effect since the range of target members was expanded in 2001. The project provides opportunities for design students in Japan, the US, the United Kingdom, and Italy. The courageous development attitude to connect talents and technologies all over the world and to develop a product from the viewpoint of design has surely made SAMSUNG a global design-oriented company.
