| Once I was looking for silverware. As for any design oriented objects in this field, silverware looks very beautiful on the table. But when you add glasses, napkins, and plates piled with food, then there are too many things that are too expressive. Then I came across this silverware. At first glance my impression was that there is no excessive insistence, and when you pick it up, it feels good in your fingers and hands. I don't put the fork inside my mouth, but the bending and the incisions make bringing it into your mouth with your arm a natural thing. Furthermore, I was surprised about what the set of this silverware comprised and by its price. The set comprises long and short forks, spoons, and five knives. These were lined up in the shop window, priced at that time (and excluding taxes) at 1,800 Yen per set. By chance I asked the salesman about the designer. It is Masayuki Kurakata, who I later had the opportunity to meet. He was delighted when I told him about the encounter with his work and about the impression the product had made on me. He told me details about his work, and as Yasue Kunieda, a coordinator for table setting, put it, the concept of the silverware is to "use the feeling of a chopstick for western silverware to feel at home with it". Masayuki Kurakata worked with her, and they are also trying to reduce the price so that it would be like buying chopsticks. This could be achieved by a co-operation with the manufacturer. The <New Windsor> can be used daily at home as if it were my chopstick. Thinking about current Japanese cuisine, I feel that this silverware is designed for the "food cosmopolitan", who doesn't eat hamburgers or croquettes with chopsticks. |
