＜PCM-D1＞は4GBフラッシュメモリ内蔵のノンメカ式リニアPCMレコーダーだ。内蔵コンデンサーマイクは頭部のX形に配置された真鍮削り出し円筒ケースに収められ、それをステンレス製のアーチ形ガードが覆う。
マイク内蔵のためボディーの不要なノイズや共振を押さえるべく、マグネシウム、チタン、ステンレスなどの素材でボディーを構成し、またボタン操作やボリューム操作で発生するノイズに対しても徹底した軽減を図っている。70年代前半、若者の間で『ナマ録』が流行し、パラボラマイクで録音し楽しんだ諸兄も多いことと思うが、＜PCM-D1＞のデザインはその頃の記憶を思い起こさせる。それは二連丸型アナログメーターの存在だろう。これもこの商品のテイストを作りあげる重要な要素となっており、プロ感覚、高性能を示すアイコンとして鎮座する。当時のナマ録少年にはストレートに響く心憎いアレンジで、従来のICレコーダーやDATレコーダーとは一味違う『機器感』を演出している。現在、多くのポッドキャスト開局に伴い予想以上の需要があると聞く。

| The < PCM-D1 > is a linear PM recorder with 4GB internal flash memory. The built-in condenser microphones are enclosed in a brass cylindrical metal case that is shaped as cylindrical from. The case arranges an X configuration, and sits on top of the body. They are protected by an arch of stainless steel. The recorder is constructed of materials such as magnesium, titanium, and stainless steel. This keeps noise and resonance of the body down, and also the built-in microphones have low self-noise. Another feature with regard to noise reductions are the button operation and the volume control. I think there are many people, who, in the first half of the 1970ies, fancied the "raw" recordings of parabolic microphones. It was very popular among young people. The design of the < PCM-D1 > makes us remember these times. Maybe especially the two round analog level meters give us that feeling. They are an important element that characterizes the image of this article and enshrined it as an icon representing professionalism and high performance. This artful arrangement hits the heart of the raw-recording boy, and it gives the impression of equipment that is a little bit different from former IC or DAT recorders.
