| The Kikkoman corporation sold the first < Soy Sauce Table Dispenser 150cc > in 1958. The product fundamentally re-evaluated the form of the bottle and of the cup, and the result was a little item for the table as well as a superior container for soy sauce. The late 1950ies were characterized by the rationalization and simplification of housekeeping. This was mainly due to electrification, and at that time, the electric rice cooker (Toshiba, 1955) and instant Chinese noodles (Nisshin, 1958) were a great success. The < Soy Sauce Table Dispenser > was also part of this trend. Until then, soy sauce had been sold in 1-sho bottles filled at retail stores. But then the new system with bottling at factories was introduced, and so you could directly take these to put on your table at home. The product also took aspects of hygiene into consideration as well as conformity with the then newly introduced forms of distribution and sales factors, as, for example, the introduction of super markets and the decreasing number of members in a family. Until the final form of the dispenser went into production, the company produced many prototypes, which especially concentrated on the design of the muzzle of the cap. Particular attention was devoted to the protection of the contents, to control pouring, as well as to ease of use and easy handling. And in fact, no liquid drops when you pour the sauce, and, whether you pick it up by the neck or the body, pouring is very much stabilized. With its overall round form and its curved middle section, the dispenser looks like current pet bottles. Furthermore, it corresponds with today's UD philosophy. The design of many soy sauce bottles is characterized by an elegant style, which still seems fresh today. And as a standard of Japanese design it is a familiar commodity in our daily lives today. |
