米国で開発された「電子インク・マイクロカプセル」をセイコーエプソンが時計用表示モジュールとして製品化。このモジュールはLCD表示デバイスと違い可視範囲はほぼ180度を誇る。＜スペクトラム＞はその特徴を生かし湾曲した広範囲な表示エリアを持つ。バングルのイメージを強調するため、表示部、電子基板、電池など従来の主要部品を重ねずにレイアウトし、非常に薄く、そして表面全体（約180度）をグラフィック表示面と捉えた新しい腕時計のスタイルを提案している。この新しい二次曲面表示面積はデザイナーに自由な発想を与え、アニメーションを中心とした楽しいグラフィックで時計であることを忘れてしまう。新たなデバイスをいかに魅力的な商品として創造するのかというデザイナーの力量を見るようだ。

| For the display of this wristwatch, Seiko uses a special e-ink technology, which was developed in the USA. This microcapsule-type Electrophoresis display is different from LCD displays. The curved display of the < Spectrum > is very wide and covers the surface of the watch up to nearly 180 degrees. The timepiece thus resembles a thin wristband. The watch being that thin is due to not arranging the electronic parts inside on top of each other. The < Spectrum > introduces a new style. The wide and curved display surface is a new inspiration for the designer. The animated graphics are very pleasant. We almost forget that this is a watch. This timepiece demonstrates the ability of the designer to create new devices as attractive commodities.
