なんとも印象的な車と出会った。筋肉質でありながら愛らしく、それでいて未来的。軽自動車の最近の傾向は、居住性能を重視したボックス的なスタイリング、また女性ユーザーを意識した茶目っ気たっぷりな内外装デザインが主流で、満足度は高いものの、ある意味マンネリ化を感じていた。また、いわゆるスポーツカーといわれる魅力的な商品も存在するが、＜i＞はこれらどれにも属さない軽自動車の新しいジャンルを提案しているように思う。日本の自動車利用実態（細い道、駐車場、近距離利用、単独乗車等）や環境問題を考慮すると軽自動車の存在は大いに喜ぶべきことだが、これまではユーザーの意見に耳を傾け過ぎ『次代の市場を創造する』というアグレッシブなデザイン手法が手薄だったのか、残念ながらこのクラスに乗り替えようと思わせるものは殆どない。このような意味で＜i＞は、なにか物足りない市場に華を持ち合わせデビューした感がある。単にレギュレーションによる区分けではなく、ユーザーの生活や満足に対し充実感を味わうという豊さのステータスであり、等身大の欲求を満たす次代の新しいジャンルだ。この車の影響が今後の軽自動車デザインや商品企画にどれだけの影響を与えて行くのか大いに楽しみなところだ。

| I came across an impressive compact car. The car looked powerfully built and pleasant at the same time, and gave the impression of being a car for the future. Recently the design of compact cars is characterized by a box-style that seriously consider passenger ride comfort and the equipment in the interior has been designed in a way that takes into consideration female drivers. Such cars are fully satisfying, but somehow I feel that they are quite uniform. Then there is this very attractive sports car called < i >, which introduces a completely new kind of compact car. Thinking about infrastructure and the utilization of cars in Japan (such as the narrow roads, parking zones, short range use, and individual use of cars, etc.), as well as environmental problems, we must be very glad that compact cars are available in Japan. But, regrettably, the design has changed in an almost aggressive way with the aim to create "the market of the next generation". This is due to the fact that the manufacturers follow the users' opinion too much, and do not try to develop alternatives - until now. In this regard, I have the impression that the < i > is a splendid debut in a market that is missing something. And this is not only the case with regard to the car being in keeping with regulations, but also its richness that meets the requirements of the user's life. In addition, this new type of next-generation car is highly satisfying. I very much expect this car to have an effective influence on the design and the planning of compact cars in the future. |
