日本への輸入が始まって三年目を迎える＜MINI＞。街角で見かける機会も多くなってきた。その前進である『ミニ』は、1956年BMC（ブリティッシュ・モーター・カンパニー）のサー・レオナード・ロードの命により開発が始まった。設計に当たったのは、自動車史にその名を残す天才設計者サー・アレックス・イシゴニスである。「ADO15」という開発コードのそのクルマは、僅か３メートルの全長に常識外れの小さなタイヤ、ラバーコーンを使った四輪独立懸架式サスペンション、横置きエンジンの前輪駆動など、まさに独創性の塊であった。これが初代『ミニ』である。「クルマが立派にその勤めを果たし続ける限りは、たとえ何年経っても変更すべきではない」というイシゴニスの言葉通り、快適性、安全性は進化したものの基本部分は変更されずにきた。
とはいえ、半世紀が過ぎ、21世紀を迎えるにあたり、新たに設計されたのがこの ＜MINI＞である。新しいテクノロジーが数多く盛りこまれ、まったく新しいクルマでありながらその基本はやはり『ミニ』である。外観デザインばかりでなく、その設計思想からは、21世紀のミニマム・トランスポーターに仕立て上げようとする設計者の思いが感じられる。 |

| Three years ago, the first < MINIS > were imported to Japan. Since then, one happened to see more and more of these cars on the streets. So finally the "MINI" advances, whose development was started by BMC (British Motor Company) in 1956 under the direction of Sir Leonard Lord. For this ingenious undertaking in design, Sir Alec Issigonis' name is to go down in the history of the automobile. One of the first prototypes was the "ADO 15", which testified to a great creativity. The car had small tires, independent suspension on all four wheels using rubber cone spring units, and front wheel drive for the transverse engine. The total length of the car was only 3 meters. About this first generation "MINI" Issigonis said: "If this car continues to serve that well, it will not have to be modified for many years." Besides features for overall conveniences and safety, the basics of the car, as Issigonis stated, never had to be changed. Now, as half a century has passed, and we have entered the 21st century, a new type of "MINI" has been designed. The < MINI ONE > features a great deal of new technology; it is a completely new car, but still a miniaturized one. Not only the appearance of the design but also the design philosophy let one feel the ideas of the designer who created it: The designer wanted to make it the "minimum transporter" of the 21st century. |
