この＜v-tec Alpha＞との出会いは「デジタル時計＝電子機器」というイメージを持つ私を瞬時に一変させた。
その理由は二つ。一つは液晶文字で、従来一文字7セグメントで表示していた数字をなんと、平均18〜19セグメントに分割し数字やアルファベットの文字デザインの完成度を高めている点だ。結果、文字本来の「伝える」機能を十二分に発揮したうえで「美しさ」をも併せ持つ。この高品位なフォントデザインは今後の表示装置に大きな影響を与えることは間違いは無いだろう。 また特筆すべきもう一つの理由はインターフェースだ。＜v-tec Alpha＞はカレンダー、別時刻、アラーム、クロノグラフ、タイマーの機能を持つが、従来のように幾つものプッシュボタンを煩雑に操作し切り替えるのではなく、一つのシリンダーダイヤルをスクロール＆プッシュし総ての操作を行う。このスマートで直感的な操作感がとても新鮮だ。 そのほか、シンプルな形態のボディーはステンレス材に独自の表面硬化処理が施された「Durinox」が使われ、ディスプレー部のサファイアクリスタルと相俟ってキズの付きにくい美しい外観が形成されている。 ＜v-tecAlpha＞はこれまでのデジタル時計というジャンルを飛び越え、機械式時計の持つ「穏やかさと温もり」を、そして時計としては全く新しいインターフェースで「独 自の操作感」を味わうことのできる新たな価値とジャンルを創造したと言えよう。 |

| I always had the image "digital clocks = electronic equipment" in my mind. But the meeting with this <v-tec Alpha> made me change my mind drastically and instantaneously. There are two reasons for that: One are the liquid-crystal letters. Until now, the numbers displayed used to consist of seven segments. But here, the signs are divided into an average of 19 to 18 segments, which allows for an accomplished design of letters and numbers. As a result, these original letters fully convey the notions of "expressiveness" and "beauty". This high quality font design will influence future display development. Furthermore, the second reason is the interface. The <v-tec Alpha> features the following functions: calendar, second time zone, alarm, chronograph, and timer. With standard models, these are operated by pushing many buttons many times. Here, however, all functions can be operated by scrolling and pushing only one cylindrical dial. This operation feels smart and intuitive and gives a very fresh impression. In addition, the simple form of the body has a unique surface. The body consists of Durinox, a specially hardened stainless steel. It has a beautiful appearance and is scratch resistant, as is the sapphire crystal of the displays section. The <v-tec Alpha> leaves the former digital clock behind. One can say that this product created a new genre and new standards. Two points distinguish the product: one is the impression of "calmness and warmth", as associated with mechanical watches, the other is the impression of this unique mode of operation by means of the completely new interface. |
