このデザインを見たとき親しみを感じ「ホッ」とした気持ちになった。
それは、炊飯器が普及する前は米を炊くお釜、できたご飯を移し変えるオヒツという二つの用具を日常目にしていたわけだが、これら用具の特徴的形態である釜底の丸みと分厚いフタ、そしてオヒツの円筒形を上手に記号化し見せてくれているからではないだろうか。 炊飯器として「見たこともない新しい造形」を狙うのではなく、「日本本来の炊飯の形」を象徴的に具現化し道具のイメージの継承を図っているように思える。無印良品の製品に見られる「素朴であるが新しい」という一貫したイメージや奇をてらわない態度は、デザイナーと企業のモノづくりへの並々ならぬ情熱を感じさせられる。 できる限り永く使いたいと思わせる道具の一つである。 |

| When I look at this design, I feel relieved. Before the dissemination of rice cookers, two devices were commonly used: One is the iron pot for cooking rice, and the other is the Ohitsu, a wooden tub, the finished rice put is into. The characteristic features of these items are the roundness of the lower part of the pot and the bulky lid. The Ohitsu's design, its pleasant and also symbolical cylindrical form, conveys a particular feeling. The design does not aim at developing a form for a rice cooker we have never seen before. It symbolically embodies the traditional style of rice cooking following the image of the traditional devices. One can see a consistent image in this product by Mujirushi Ryohin: It is characterizes by simplicity, but it is new. It does not make a grand display of its originality, and this product of industrial design is very much to my liking. It is one of the appliances, which give us the feeling that we should use them for as long as possible. |
