初代エスティマは「ミニバン」あるいは「MPV」と呼ばれるセグメントで、その先進的なエンジンレイアウトとデザインにより高い評価を得た。そして1999年に発売された新しいエスティマはオーソドックスなエンジンレイアウトと初代ほど新味のなくなったデザイン、まさにそれこそが「ミニバン」がマーケットの主流となった現状での正解に思われた。しかし、この＜エスティマハイブリッド＞こそが、まさに新世紀のグローバルスタンダードとしてトヨタが世に送りだした模範解答だ。
「プリウス」発売から4年余り、エンジン＋モーターのハイブリッドシステムの環境性能は更に進化し、そしてなによりも4輪独立電子制御システムと組み合わされた電気式4輪駆動システムは、これからの自動車の技術標準となる大きな技術革新である。 ハイブリッドシステムとこれらの駆動/制御システム、そしてモノフォルムデザインのパッケージを纏うこの＜エスティマハイブリッド＞の存在は次世代自動車のあるべき姿の一つとして高く評価されるものであろう。 |

| The first generation of the Estima was in a segment called "minivan" or "MPV". The progressive engine layout and design received high ratings. The new Estima that has been on sole since 1999 has an orthodox engine layout and a design with a less fresh feeling than the first one. This is surely correct under the present circumstances where the "minivan" became a main stream object on the market. But still the "Estima Hybrid" is an exemplary answer from Toyota that has a global standard for the new century. It is about 4 years since the "Prius" went on sale. Since then, a hybrid system of engine + motor has been developed, that is more efficient under the circumstances. There are independent electrical driven front and rear wheels and an electric 4 wheel driving force distribution control system. These systems are a big revolutions in the technical standards of cars. The existence of a car, which covers a hybrid system as the driving force, gives a mono form design. This must be rated to be the ideal of the next car generation. |
