軽乗用車N360の大ヒットで四輪車に本格的に参入したホンダが、その後もシビック、シティ、オデッセイなど数々のヒット商品を生み出してきた大きな要因の一つに、パッケージングの巧みさがあげられる。そこにはホンダの提唱する「マンマキシマム・メカミニマム」というDNAが連綿と息づいていることを感じさせる。
この＜Fit＞は全長わずか3.8m余りでしかないが、後席を倒すと実に奥行き1.7mを超えるフルフラットな荷室が出現する。この長さは全長4m半ばの車でも実現し得ない程の長さだ。これを可能にしたのは燃料タンクを前席の下に置いたことで、これによって後部シートが手品のように隠すことができたのである。さらに後部シートの工夫で、高さ1.2m以上のものまで積み込めるというのは、まさにホンダ独特のマジックといえる。実にシートアレンジがうまい。 この＜Fit＞のエクステリアデザインに対して自動車誌やカージャーナリストの評価は意外と辛口である。「当たり前すぎる」というのだが、一部に見られるデザイナーの遊び過ぎや一過性のフェイク・カーに比べればはるかに健全で好感が持てるではないか。 最近の小型車が単に経済性だけではなく、文化として根付いてきたことは、日本も本当の意味で自動車成熟国として大人になったような気がする。 |

| The light mobile, N360, was a big hit. Afterwards Honda was really got in to producing cars , making hit products like Civic, City and Odyssey to name a few. One of the main reasons is good skilled packaging. Honda's advocacy is "Man, maximum. Mechanic, minimum". This is like a DNA, breathing without being interrupted. We can feel it. This Fit is only 3.8m long. But put on the back seat, it has actually a depth of over 1.7m. And it has a full flat cargo room. This depth of car is not possible for a car that is four and a half meters long. One way of making this depth possible is that the fuel space is set on the front seats. Because of this, the back seats can be hidden like magic. More than this, a device for the back seat making it possible to carry something that is over 1.2m. It is really a peculiar magic by Honda. What a good seat arrangement! Unthinkably, this exterior design of "Fit", has been undervalued by car magazines and journalists . They think, "it is much too usual". But I think it is sounder than some parts which seems like the designer plays too much, or transient fake cars. We can have a good feeling about it, isn't it. Nowadays, small automobiles have taken root as a culture of their own and not only from the point of economy. It means, finally Japan as a country has a period of maturity. It seems like it's becoming an adult. |
