ここ数年、腕時計のパワーユニットの進歩は素晴らしい。シチズンの選択は光で動くクリーンエネルギーの光発電＜エコドライブ＞で商品開発を進めている。そのパワーユニットに電波時計を組み込んだのがこの腕時計で、日本国内の標準時刻電波を受信して時間を合わせる機能を持っている。つまりいつでも時計を見れば正確な時間を知ることができるのだ。標準時刻電波のカレンダー情報も取り入れているので、使い手としては電池交換も時刻・日付修正もいらない非常にありがたい腕時計である。
光発電も、電波時計も従来からある機能ではあるが、今その二つが腕時計の小さな世界で一体になり我々に提供されている。本来の時計としてのイメージを維持しながら電波時計の機能を組み込むというテーマを、この腕時計は解決して、その結果としてのデザインが一つの明瞭な表現をみせている。「新しい機能をどのような形にするのか？」ということへの解答の一つがこの＜エコ・ドライブ＞だと思う。 |
